RRB JE 2026: Syllabus, Cut Off, Salary & Dates

Railway Recruitment Boards hold this exam to fill Junior Engineer (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, S&T and other branches), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) posts across Indian Railway zones and production units. All these are Level 6 technical supervisor posts. Selection runs through two computer-based tests (CBT-1 and CBT-2), then document verification and a medical test.

How selection works

CBT-1 is a common screening test; candidates are shortlisted for CBT-2 separately for each RRB and each post category (CAT number) based on normalised CBT-1 marks. Final selection is based on normalised CBT-2 marks, post preferences and the category-wise vacancies, after which shortlisted candidates go through document verification and a medical examination as per the medical standard of the allotted post. CBT-1 marks are not added to the final merit.

Frequently asked questions

Is there negative marking in RRB JE?
Yes. In both CBT-1 and CBT-2, one-third of a mark is cut for every wrong answer. Unanswered questions carry no penalty.
Are CBT-1 marks counted in the final merit list?
No. CBT-1 is only a screening test used to shortlist candidates for CBT-2. The final merit is based on CBT-2 normalised marks.
When is the RRB JE 2026 CBT-1 exam?
For CEN 04/2026, CBT-1 is scheduled on 27, 28 and 30 October 2026. The exam city slip comes about 10 days before and the e-call letter about 4 days before your exam date.
How many vacancies are there in RRB JE 2026?
CEN 04/2026 has 4,029 vacancies after a corrigendum raised the count from 3,993, covering Junior Engineer, DMS and CMA posts.
What is the age limit for RRB JE 2026?
18 to 33 years as on 1 January 2027 for UR/EWS candidates, with 3 years extra for OBC-NCL and 5 years for SC/ST, plus other relaxations listed in the notice.
What is the salary of an RRB JE?
JE, DMS and CMA are all Pay Level 6 posts with a starting basic pay of Rs 35,400 per month, plus DA, HRA and other allowances.
Can final-year diploma or B.Tech students apply?
You must hold the required qualification by the closing date of the application (13 September 2026 for CEN 04/2026). Check the CEN for the exact rule on results awaited.
Is the RRB JE cut off the same for all zones?
No. Cut offs are published separately by each RRB, and within an RRB separately for each post category (CAT number) and reservation category.
