How it works
- Choose a mode. Exam mode for a real test, Practice mode to choose speed and minutes.
- Choose the sounds. Clean, Real exam hall or Tough – test them before you start.
- Take down the dictation in shorthand on paper (use headphones).
- Type your transcription when the dictation ends. Copy-paste and spell-check are off; backspace works.
- Get your result: full and half mistakes, error %, qualified or not for your category, your text marked word by word, the correct passage and the shorthand outlines.
How to build steno speed – the speed ladder
| Stage | Speed | How to practise | Sounds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 40–50 wpm | 1–2 minutes at a time. Read your notes back before typing. | Clean |
| Building | 60–70 wpm | 3–5 minutes. Fix every wrong outline from the result. | Clean → Real exam hall |
| Grade D level | 80 wpm | Full 10 minutes, exam mode, once a day. | Real exam hall |
| Above Grade D | 90 wpm | Minutes you find hard, then full passages. | Real exam hall |
| Grade C level | 100 wpm | Full passages at 100 wpm, then 110 for extra margin. | Tough |
Move up 10 wpm only when your error % is within your category's limit two times in a row. Type every wrong word five times and practise its outline.

How SSC counts steno mistakes
Full mistake (1)
- Every word left out (omission)
- Wrong word (substitution) or extra word
- Repeated word, incomplete word
- Abbreviation for a full word (Govt. for Government) or the reverse
- Word typed in ALL CAPITALS
Half mistake (½)
- Spelling mistake
- Singular / plural
- Full stop missing at the end of a sentence or put at a wrong place
- Wrong capital / small letter
Not counted: commas and other punctuation, line breaks, extra spaces, figures for words (70 = seventy), hyphen typed as space, British / American spelling.
Error % = (full mistakes + ½ × half mistakes) ÷ words in the passage × 100.
Exam-hall sounds
At the exam centre the dictation is played through hall speakers. Candidates often lose words because of echo, a muffled speaker, other candidates whispering, fans and coolers, a cough or a chair. Practise with these sounds so they do not break your concentration on the exam day.
- Old loudspeaker – thin, slightly distorted voice
- Hall echo – sound bouncing in a big room
- Background chatter – murmuring candidates
- Fan / cooler – steady hum
- Pencils writing – the scratch of many candidates taking down shorthand around you
- Sudden sounds – coughs, chairs, pages, a pen falling
- Volume dips – the voice goes softer for a few seconds
Steno dictation – questions
Is this steno dictation free?
Yes. Listen to the dictation, take it down in shorthand, type your transcription and get your SSC-style result free. No login is needed.
Can I practise at a slower or faster speed?
Yes. Open a dictation in Practice mode and choose 40 to 120 words per minute. The voice keeps its normal pitch. You can also choose only some minutes (for example minutes 1–2) and pause or rewind.
What is exam mode?
Exam mode works like the SSC skill test: the dictation plays once at its original speed, you cannot pause or rewind, the transcription time is SSC's time for your grade and the result uses SSC's mistake rules and your category's allowed error %.
What are exam-hall sounds?
In the real test the dictation comes through hall speakers, with echo, other candidates talking and scratching with their pencils, fans and sudden noises. Choose 'Real exam hall' or 'Tough' to practise with these sounds so the exam does not disturb you.
How are mistakes counted?
Words left out, wrong or extra words are full mistakes; spelling, singular/plural, full stop and capital-letter mistakes are half mistakes; commas and line breaks are not counted. Error % = (full + half ÷ 2) ÷ words in the passage × 100.
Will Hindi steno dictation be added?
Yes. All SSC English PYQ dictations of 2018–2023 (Grade C and D) are here now; Hindi dictations and expected dictations at different speeds are being added.
