What is a good typing speed?
| Level | Speed | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | Below 25 WPM | Still looking at the keys – start the lessons from lesson 1. |
| Average | 30–40 WPM | Enough for daily computer work and most clerk-level typing tests (e.g. 35 WPM for SSC CHSL LDC). |
| Good | 45–60 WPM | Comfortable for office, data entry and content work. |
| Fast | 60+ WPM | Professional speed – keep accuracy above 97%. |
A rough guide. WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 per minute; KDPH = correct key depressions per hour (WPM × 300).
Typing tests for SSC, RRB NTPC, BSF HCM & DSSSB
Hindi typing (हिंदी टाइपिंग)
60-day roadmap: from zero to exam typing speed
Daily routine: type for 30 minutes, two times a day (morning and evening).
Speed needed: CGL DEST and CHSL DEO 8,000 KDPH (2000 in 15 min ≈ 27 WPM); CHSL LDC/JSA 10,500 KDPH (1750 in 10 min = 35 WPM). Aim about 20% above, because exam nerves and a new keyboard slow you down.
Daily routine (30–45 minutes)
- Warm-up, 5 min: weak-key drill in Practice.
- Lesson or speed test, 15 min: the next lesson, or a 3-minute test three times.
- Passage, 15 min: one SSC passage, then type each wrong word five times.
- Check progress on My results.
- Sit straight, screen at eye level, wrists slightly raised.
- Left hand on A S D F, right hand on J K L ; – thumbs on the space bar.
- Use the opposite hand's Shift for capitals.
- Each finger presses only its own keys – the lessons show which.
How SSC checks the typing test
Full mistakes (count 1)
- Every word or figure left out
- Every wrong word or spelling mistake
- Every extra word not in the passage
- A repeated word (“I shall shall be…”)
- An incomplete (half-typed) word
Half mistakes (count ½)
- Spacing: two words joined (“Ihope”) or a word split (“h ave”)
- Wrong capital or small letter
- Punctuation left out, added or changed
- Two words swapped (“hope I”)
Error % = (full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2) ÷ words in the passage × 100. Type exactly as given – numbers, capitals and punctuation included – with one space after a punctuation mark.

PwD candidates (one hand / scribe) in the SSC typing test
- 5 minutes compensatory time for candidates eligible for a scribe – blind / low vision, both arms affected, cerebral palsy, and other benchmark disabilities (such as one arm, OA) with the certificate: CHSL LDC/JSA 15 min (instead of 10), CGL DEST and CHSL DEO 20 min (instead of 15). Same passage and key depressions. Choose a PwD category on the test page and tick the option.
- VH candidates who opt for a scribe get a passage dictator.
- Exemption: OH candidates permanently unfit for the typing test / DEST can be exempted with a Civil Surgeon / Medical Board certificate in the prescribed annexure and the Commission's prior approval. HH and VH candidates are not exempt.
- Typing with one hand: keep the hand in the middle of the keyboard (index finger on G or H), use Caps Lock for capitals in names, and practise the Learn lessons slowly first – accuracy matters more than speed.
- Mistakes allowed for PwD: CGL DEST / CPT 10%, CHSL LDC 10%, CHSL DEO 7%.
RRB NTPC, BSF / CAPF HCM and DSSSB: net speed rule
- Words typed = key depressions ÷ 5 (spaces included).
- Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2 – only in the part you typed (words not reached are not mistakes).
- Ignorable = 5% of the words typed. Final mistakes = mistakes − ignorable (not below 0).
- Net speed (WPM) = (words typed − final mistakes × 10) ÷ 10 minutes.
Example: 2000 key depressions = 400 words typed; 20 full + 10 half = 25 mistakes; 5% of 400 = 20 ignored → 5 final mistakes → (400 − 50) ÷ 10 = 35 WPM. Qualifies for RRB NTPC (30 WPM) and BSF HCM / DSSSB (35 WPM).
Tips to type faster and clear a typing test
- Accuracy before speed: below 95% accuracy, slow down. Speed comes when the fingers stop making mistakes.
- Never look at the keyboard – it is the main reason people stay stuck at 20 WPM. Feel the bumps on F and J.
- Practise 30–45 minutes every day instead of one long session a week.
- If you skip a word, type on – a left-out word is one full mistake; going back and forth wastes time.
- Keep the last 1–2 minutes to read your text and fix capitals, punctuation and spaces (half mistakes add up).
- One space after a full stop or comma. Do not press Enter or Tab – the passage is a single paragraph.
- Practise on a desktop keyboard like the exam centre's, and switch on exam-hall noise in the last weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is this typing test and typing course really free?
Yes. The lessons, speed tests and practice are free and run in your browser – nothing to download and no sign-up needed. A free RealMocks login is needed only for the SSC exam-style tests, so that your results are saved.
How do I check my typing speed?
Open the typing speed test, choose 1, 2, 3 or 5 minutes and start typing the words shown. When the time is over you see your speed in WPM (words per minute) and KDPH (key depressions per hour), your accuracy and the keys you miss most.
How is WPM calculated?
Every 5 correctly typed characters (spaces included) count as one word. WPM = correct characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes. KDPH = correct characters per hour, so 35 WPM = 10,500 KDPH.
What is a good typing speed?
As a rough guide: below 25 WPM is a beginner, 30–40 WPM is average, 45–60 WPM is good and above 60 WPM is fast. For job and exam typing tests, accuracy matters as much as speed – aim for 95% or more.
How can I learn typing fast as a beginner?
Learn touch typing: keep your fingers on the home row (A S D F – J K L ;), let each finger press only its own keys and never look at the keyboard. Practise 30 minutes twice a day; the free lessons here take you from the home row to full passages step by step.
Can I practise typing on a mobile phone?
Yes – the lessons and tests open on a phone. For real practice, connect a keyboard to your phone with an OTG cable or Bluetooth; typing on the phone's screen keyboard does not build touch-typing skill.
Is Hindi typing available?
Yes – free Hindi typing lessons and Hindi typing tests for Kruti Dev 010, Mangal Remington GAIL and Mangal InScript are at realmocks.com/typing/hindi.
How many key depressions are there in SSC CGL and CHSL typing tests?
SSC CGL DEST: 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. SSC CHSL LDC/JSA/JPA typing test: 1750 key depressions in 10 minutes (35 words per minute). SSC CHSL DEO Grade 'A' skill test: 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. Recent exams give a single paragraph.
What is a key depression?
Every key you press to type a character – a letter, a number, a space or a punctuation mark – is one key depression. Every passage here is exactly 2000 or 1750 characters long, spaces included.
How is the error percentage calculated?
Full mistakes count 1 and half mistakes count ½. Error % = total mistakes ÷ number of words in the passage × 100. Words of the passage you did not reach are counted as left out; the result also shows your error without them.
How many mistakes are allowed in SSC CGL DEST?
For DEST posts (Tax Assistant CBIC/CBDT, UDC/SSA in CBN) and CPT posts: UR 5%, OBC / EWS / SC / ST / ESM 7%, OH / HH / VH / PwD-Others 10%. For all other CGL posts: UR 20%, OBC / EWS 25%, all others 30%.
How many mistakes are allowed in SSC CHSL typing test?
LDC / JSA / JPA: UR 7%, all other categories 10%. DEO Grade 'A': UR 5%, all other categories 7%.
How is the RRB NTPC typing test (CBTST) checked?
10 minutes, English 30 WPM (Hindi 25 WPM). Backspace and editing are not allowed, and you may type the passage again from the start. You must type at least 300 words. Words typed = key depressions ÷ 5; mistakes = full + half ÷ 2; 5% of the words typed are ignored; net speed = (words typed − final mistakes × 10) ÷ 10.
What is the BSF HCM / DSSSB JA typing test?
The passage is given on paper and you type it on the computer for 10 minutes: 35 WPM in English (30 WPM in Hindi). Net speed = (words typed − mistakes after the 5% allowance × 10) ÷ 10. Backspace is allowed in BSF and DSSSB but not in CRPF and some other CAPF tests.
Do PwD candidates get extra time in the SSC typing test?
Yes. PwBD candidates eligible for a scribe get 5 minutes compensatory time: CHSL LDC/JSA 15 minutes instead of 10, CGL DEST and CHSL DEO 20 minutes instead of 15. VH candidates who opt for a scribe get a passage dictator. Candidates permanently unfit for typing can be exempted with a medical certificate and the Commission's approval.
Do I need to log in?
Lessons and practice work without login. To attempt an SSC test passage, log in with your free RealMocks account – your results are saved so you can see them again and re-attempt any passage.
