The editorial explained

A court in New Mexico has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to pay a staggering $25 billion for misleading its users about how much they actually had over their personal data. This is the largest financial penalty the company has ever faced for a privacy-related offence. The judge's words were direct and uncompromising: Facebook had assured people that they controlled their information, but this assurance turned out to be hollow. Meta has announced plans to challenge the verdict, yet the ruling has already reopened old wounds connected to one of the most notorious data scandals in recent history.

The case naturally brings back memories of the Cambridge Analytica episode, where information from roughly 87 million Facebook accounts was quietly extracted and used to influence voters during the 2016 American presidential election. That incident became the clearest example of what analysts call capitalism, a system in which companies track every click, purchase and movement a person makes, then convert this behavioural data into profitable about future actions. Rather than fading away, this model has only deepened over the years, as more applications and connected devices gather information, making the original promise of personal over one's own data increasingly meaningless.

Beyond deliberate exploitation of data, there exists an equally troubling pattern of carelessness in safeguarding it, and Indian institutions supply no shortage of examples. The most recent case involves the State Bank of India, which admitted this week that customer records were part of a larger set of nearly 375,000 entries allegedly circulating on the dark web. Troublingly, the bank's official disclosure came a full five days after it first received the warning, and it failed to clarify whether affected customers were informed or how the actually occurred.

In a separate incident during the same week, eMudhra, a Bengaluru-based firm that global web browsers rely upon to certify the authenticity of websites, was discovered to have created security keys so feeble that one of them was literally just the digit four. Had anyone exploited this weakness, they could have posed as any website and secretly the data of its visitors. Such security lapses are unfortunately not isolated events in India's digital landscape.

History offers sobering precedents too. The ransomware strike on AIIMS Delhi back in 2021 compromised patient records and severely essential medical services for an extended period. Incidents of this kind continue to swell an already overflowing dark web, where Indian citizens' phone numbers, home and birth dates are traded with troubling ease among cybercriminals.

Ordinary citizens, however, have remarkably few options when such occur. At present, no enforceable law compels a company to promptly inform affected individuals about a data leak; this obligation under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act will only take effect from May 13, 2027. In the meantime, the IT ministry's initial response leaned towards reassurance, describing the eMudhra lapse as having a very impact and cautioning against what it termed needless fear mongering among the public.

Although the ministry has since set up an investigation into the matter, it must ensure that every treats such with the gravity they genuinely deserve, rather than downplaying them for convenience. The Court had formally privacy as a right back in 2017, establishing a strong constitutional foundation for data protection in the country. Yet nearly nine years later, Indian citizens still cannot be certain they will even be told when their privacy has been , let alone how severely the damage extends.

Data Breaches Expose Gaps in India's Privacy Protection

Paragraph 1

A court in New Mexico has ordered Meta, the parent company of Facebook, to pay a staggering $25 billion for misleading its users about how much control they actually had over their personal data.

Paragraph 2

The case naturally brings back memories of the Cambridge Analytica episode, where information from roughly 87 million Facebook accounts was quietly extracted and used to influence voters during the 2016 American presidential election.

That incident became the clearest example of what analysts call surveillance capitalism, a system in which companies track every click, purchase and movement a person makes, then convert this behavioural data into profitable predictions about future actions.

Rather than fading away, this model has only deepened over the years, as more applications and connected devices gather information, making the original promise of personal control over one's own data increasingly meaningless.

Grammar point: 'making the original promise...meaningless' एक participle phrase है जो परिणाम बता रहा है।

सार: यह पैराग्राफ बताता है कि Cambridge Analytica जैसी घटनाओं ने surveillance capitalism को उजागर किया और यह प्रवृत्ति समय के साथ और बढ़ती गई है, जिससे डेटा पर व्यक्तिगत नियंत्रण लगभग असंभव होता जा रहा है।

Paragraph 3

Beyond deliberate exploitation of data, there exists an equally troubling pattern of carelessness in safeguarding it, and Indian institutions supply no shortage of examples.

The most recent case involves the State Bank of India, which admitted this week that customer records were part of a larger set of nearly 375,000 entries allegedly circulating on the dark web.

Troublingly, the bank's official disclosure came a full five days after it first received the warning, and it failed to clarify whether affected customers were informed or how the breach actually occurred.

Paragraph 4

In a separate incident during the same week, eMudhra, a Bengaluru-based firm that global web browsers rely upon to certify the authenticity of websites, was discovered to have created security keys so feeble that one of them was literally just the digit four.

Had anyone exploited this weakness, they could have posed as any website and secretly intercepted the data of its visitors.

यहाँ बताया गया है कि अगर किसी ने इस कमज़ोरी का फायदा उठाया होता, तो वह किसी भी वेबसाइट का रूप धारण करके उसके visitors का डेटा गुप्त रूप से बीच में रोक सकता था। 'exploited' यानी फायदा उठाना, दुरुपयोग करना। 'impersonate' का अर्थ है किसी का रूप धारण करना, नकल करना। 'intercept' यानी बीच में रोकना। Grammar point: 'Had anyone exploited...they could have posed' एक third conditional sentence है जो एक काल्पनिक अतीत की स्थिति और उसके संभावित परिणाम को दिखाता है।

Such security lapses are unfortunately not isolated events in India's digital landscape.

Paragraph 5

History offers sobering precedents too.

इस line में लेखक कह रहे हैं कि इतिहास में भी ऐसी घटनाएँ मिलती हैं जो चिंताजनक सबक देती हैं। यह एक संक्रमण वाली line है जो अगले उदाहरण की तरफ ले जाती है। sobering – गंभीर सोच में डालने वाला, सरल शब्द है चिंताजनक। precedents – पहले की मिसालें या उदाहरण, यह word SSC में पूछा जा चुका है।

The ransomware strike on AIIMS Delhi back in 2021 compromised patient records and severely disrupted essential medical services for an extended period.

Incidents of this kind continue to swell an already overflowing dark web, where Indian citizens' phone numbers, home addresses and birth dates are traded with troubling ease among cybercriminals.

Paragraph 6

Ordinary citizens, however, have remarkably few options when such breaches occur.

इस line में कहा गया है कि जब ऐसी data चोरी होती है तो आम नागरिकों के पास करने के लिए बहुत कम विकल्प बचते हैं। यह अगले हिस्से की शुरुआत है जहां कानूनी कमी की बात होगी। remarkably few options – आश्चर्यजनक रूप से बहुत कम विकल्प, सरल शब्द है बहुत सीमित उपाय। breaches – सेंध या उल्लंघन, यह word SSC में पूछा जा चुका है।

At present, no enforceable law compels a company to promptly inform affected individuals about a data leak; this obligation under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act will only take effect from May 13, 2027.

grammar point: compels to inform की जगह सही pattern है compel someone to do something।

In the meantime, the IT ministry's initial response leaned towards reassurance, describing the eMudhra lapse as having a very limited impact and cautioning against what it termed needless fear mongering among the public.

Paragraph 7

Although the ministry has since set up an investigation into the matter, it must ensure that every stakeholder treats such violations with the gravity they genuinely deserve, rather than downplaying them for convenience.

The Supreme Court had formally recognised privacy as a fundamental right back in 2017, establishing a strong constitutional foundation for data protection in the country.

Yet nearly nine years later, Indian citizens still cannot be certain they will even be told when their privacy has been breached, let alone how severely the damage extends.
