How the net speed is worked out
- Words typed = key depressions ÷ 5 (spaces included).
- Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2 – only in the part you typed (words not reached are not mistakes).
- Ignorable = 5% of the words typed. Final mistakes = mistakes − ignorable (not below 0).
- Net speed (WPM) = (words typed − final mistakes × 10) ÷ 10 minutes.
Example: 2000 key depressions = 400 words typed; 20 full + 10 half = 25 mistakes; 5% of 400 = 20 ignored → 5 final mistakes → (400 − 50) ÷ 10 = 35 WPM. Qualifies for RRB NTPC (30 WPM) and BSF HCM / DSSSB (35 WPM).
- RRB notice (CEN 06/2024, 06.02.2026): 1-minute warm-up, then 10 minutes; English 30 WPM, Hindi 25 WPM.
- Type at least 300 words in English (250 in Hindi) – otherwise the test is not evaluated.
- Editing tools (Backspace, Delete, arrows) are not allowed. If you finish the passage, type it again from the start – this is why a fast typist can afford a few more mistakes: more words typed means a bigger 5% allowance.
- PwBD: candidates with 40%+ permanent blindness / low vision, cerebral palsy or locomotor disability (incl. one arm) can be exempted with a Medical Board certificate (Annexure V(E)) uploaded before the test.
