How the net speed is worked out
Words typed = key depressions ÷ 5 (spaces included).
Mistakes = full mistakes + half mistakes ÷ 2 – only in the part you typed (words not reached are not mistakes).
Ignorable = 5% of the words typed. Final mistakes = mistakes − ignorable (not below 0).
Net speed (WPM) = (words typed − final mistakes × 10) ÷ 10 minutes.
Example: 2000 key depressions = 400 words typed; 20 full + 10 half = 25 mistakes; 5% of 400 = 20 ignored → 5 final mistakes → (400 − 50) ÷ 10 = 35 WPM. Qualifies for RRB NTPC (30 WPM) and BSF HCM / DSSSB (35 WPM).
The passage is given on paper; you type it on the computer (10 minutes, English 35 WPM / Hindi 30 WPM – 10,500 / 9,000 key depressions per hour).
BSF allows Backspace; CRPF and some other CAPF tests turn it off – choose your exam on the test page.
Passage length: the official minimum is 1,750 key depressions (English) / 1,500 (Hindi); our passages are 2,000. A fast typist can finish early – then start the passage again from the beginning until the time is over (DSSSB's typing test instructions allow restarting the same passage until "Stop typing"). Speed is always worked out on the full 10 minutes, so stopping early lowers your speed.
No official previous-year passages are published by BSF, CAPF or DSSSB, so these are SSC previous-year passages and RBE Advanced passages of the same length and style. Check the exact rules in your own notification.
