castigate in SSC previous-year questions
- SSC Steno 2026 T-1 Spelling
Select the wrongly spelt word out of the four alternatives.
Answer & explanation
Answer: D) castigait
Rule: verbs that reach English from a Latin past participle in -atus end in -ate, never in -ait.
So: *educate, investigate, narrate, castigate*.
The spelling -ait belongs only to a few unrelated words such as *strait*, *trait* and *bait*.
My own example: *The teacher will* berate *him*, never *berait*.
castigait is the misspelt option. The correct form is castigate = to scold or criticise severely *(कड़ी फटकार लगाना, कठोर निंदा करना)*.
Why the others are wrong.
• temperature = the degree of heat or cold *(तापमान)* — correctly spelt; the -per- is swallowed in speech but must be written.
• meticulously = with very great attention to detail *(अत्यंत सावधानी से)* — correctly spelt, simply *metic
