Which part of the following sentence contains a spelling error?
The panellists (1) engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue (2) on post-modern ethics, but one speaker’s argumentation (3) lacked coherance (4).Answer & explanation
Answer: B) (4)
Rule: verbs ending in -here / -ere form their nouns in -ence, never -ance:
cohere → coherence, adhere → adherence, interfere → interference, infer → inference.
Example of my own: *His alibi lacked* coherence*, so the police kept questioning him.*
Part (4) prints coherance, so it holds the spelling error.
The correct word is coherence = logical connectedness, the quality of hanging together *(संगति, तारतम्य)* — and "lacked" in the sentence tells you a noun is wanted there.

• (1) panellists = the members of a discussion panel *(परिचर्चा-मंडल के सदस्य)* — correct in British spelling, which doubles the l before -ist; American English writes *panelists*.
• (2) thought-pro
