Beyond Religiosity: Lessons from the Kolkata Pandal Tragedy

The editorial explained

A tragic stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata's Girish Park area claimed 19 lives, raising serious questions about crowd management during festive celebrations. This year's puja was being promoted as , with the government highlighting a 25% in the number of pandals across the state and senior ministers making appearances to boost the festival's popular . However, the tragedy exposed how organisers and police to the dangers of a large, excited crowd gathering in a confined space.

Puja pandals, much like Ganapati installations in Mumbai, are usually spaces of creativity and that remain largely -free despite drawing huge crowds. This particular pandal had a theme built around controlling light, which required entry and exit points. The surrounding lanes were so narrow that even two cars could not pass together, creating a dangerous bottleneck that nobody had properly planned for.

Things turned worse when unseasonal rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, struck the city even as the monsoon was in . Visitors who were already moving through the pandal rushed inside seeking shelter from the sudden downpour, packing the structure beyond safe limits. This sudden surge of movement, driven by panic, is exactly the kind of situation that crowd-control planning must .

The real danger began when organisers, fearing the pandal structure might under the weight of the crowd, requested people to leave immediately. Although their concern about the structure's safety was genuine, the sudden announcement triggered panic rather than an orderly exit. Experts agree that packed crowds stay safe only when sudden, panic-driven surges are avoided; here, the very warning meant to protect people ended up endangering them.

This incident raises a broader concern: did the government's push to make the celebrations grand and spectacular come at the cost of basic safety practices? Reports suggest that only home guards, rather than experienced and police personnel, had been deployed at this busy pandal. A , more systematic deployment of trained officers might have helped manage the crowd and prevented the .

The state government has promised a formal inquiry and deterrent action against those found responsible for ignoring safety norms. While the administration was quick to claim that police helped rush to hospitals, the larger lesson is about prevention rather than response. Festivals built on religious belief and public enthusiasm must be matched with equally serious attention to safety infrastructure, not just political presence and numbers.

Beyond Religiosity: Lessons from the Kolkata Pandal Tragedy
