This unease fits into a larger pattern that has emerged since the new state government took office in May, promising a clean break from the past. Five months on, its conduct looks more like that of a street-level opposition group than a ruling administration focused on hard governance. Arrested members of the earlier ruling party were reportedly paraded through their old strongholds by police and paramilitary forces soon after the of power. Two new laws, one amending rules for universities and colleges and another aimed at curbing organised crime, have further raised concern about administrative .

Critics argue that such steps copy an older political playbook that the new government had promised to end, one built on , muscle power and a sense of . Instead of focusing energy on creating jobs or weak public institutions, the government appears drawn to identity-based confrontations that are easier to mobilise but do little to real problems. This gap between promise and practice is at the heart of current criticism.

To its credit, the ruling party has not spoken in one voice on the row. At least two senior leaders, including the state's finance minister, publicly condemned the attacks, insisting that no political or ideological can justify destroying books. Yet this measured tone sits awkwardly next to another leader's suggestion that the Left should simply sell its books from party offices instead of public fairs, a remark many saw as of the issue's seriousness.

Investigations into the are still ongoing, and the identity of those responsible has not been officially confirmed. What remains clear is that Bengal's literary culture and its appetite for open argument are widely seen as genuine , not threats to be managed. Commentators suggest that protecting this ground, rather than it, should be a natural for any government claiming to represent the state's traditions.

Taken , these events suggest that governing well requires more than winning an election and delivering slogans. It demands patient institution-building, job creation and a willingness to let political rivals in shared public spaces. Bengal's voters, the argument goes, deserve a government that governs quietly and effectively, not one that keeps fighting old battles on new soil.

In short – quick revision

Five months after taking charge in West Bengal, the new government is accused of acting like an opposition party rather than an administration. Vandalism of Left party book stalls during Durga Puja has raised fresh questions about tolerance, institutional autonomy and governance priorities.

  • Some ruling party leaders condemned the vandalism while another leader's remark was seen as dismissive.
  • Investigations into the vandalism are ongoing; no official identification of culprits yet.
  • Commentators urge the government to focus on jobs and institution-building instead of identity politics.

पूरा हिंदी अनुवाद – Bengal Waits: Governance Promised, Opposition-Style Politics Delivered

Paragraph 1

West Bengal's Durga Puja has long been known as a shared public space, often called the sarbojonin, where people of every belief can mix freely.

grammar point, has long been known present perfect passive है जो दिखाता है कि यह पहचान बहुत समय से चली आ रही है।

Devout worshippers, curious sceptics and sharp debaters have all found room under the same festive sky.

Alongside the drumbeats and food stalls, small book stalls set up by Left parties have been a familiar sight for decades.

This year, however, that old spirit of shared ground seems to have faltered, as reports came in of these book stalls being vandalised across several districts.

grammar point, being vandalised passive participle structure है जो बताता है कि यह घटना किताब स्टॉल के साथ हुई। wrap: यह पूरा पैराग्राफ बताता है कि दुर्गा पूजा का साझा और सहिष्णु माहौल इस साल वामपंथी किताब स्टॉल पर हुई तोड़फोड़ से हिचकिचाता हुआ नज़र आया।

Paragraph 2

This unease fits into a larger pattern that has emerged since the new state government took office in May, promising a clean break from the past.

clean break from the past मुहावरा है जिसका अर्थ है पुरानी व्यवस्था से पूरी तरह अलग हो जाना। took office – पदभार संभालना, एक common collocation है।

Five months on, its conduct looks more like that of a street-level opposition group than a ruling administration focused on hard governance.

Arrested members of the earlier ruling party were reportedly paraded through their old strongholds by police and paramilitary forces soon after the change of power.

grammar point, were paraded through passive voice है; active रूप होगा police and paramilitary forces reportedly paraded arrested members through their old strongholds।

Two new laws, one amending rules for universities and colleges and another aimed at curbing organised crime, have further raised concern about administrative overreach.

Paragraph 3

Critics argue that such steps copy an older political playbook that the new government had promised to end, one built on patronage, muscle power and a sense of impunity.

Instead of focusing energy on creating jobs or strengthening weak public institutions, the government appears drawn to identity-based confrontations that are easier to mobilise but do little to address real problems.

This gap between promise and practice is at the heart of current criticism.

Paragraph 4

To its credit, the ruling party has not spoken in one voice on the vandalism row.

इस line में बताया गया है कि सत्तारूढ़ पार्टी की अच्छी बात यह है कि तोड़फोड़ के इस विवाद पर उसकी पूरी पार्टी ने एक जैसी राय नहीं दिखाई, यानी पार्टी के भीतर अलग-अलग स्वर सुनाई दिए। to its credit – इसके श्रेय में, यानी इस सकारात्मक बात के लिए पार्टी की तारीफ़ बनती है। not spoken in one voice मुहावरा है जिसका अर्थ है एकमत न होना, अलग-अलग राय होना। row – यहाँ इसका अर्थ है विवाद, वाद-विवाद, झगड़े के अर्थ में नहीं।

At least two senior leaders, including the state's finance minister, publicly condemned the attacks, insisting that no political or ideological difference can justify destroying books.

Yet this measured tone sits awkwardly next to another leader's suggestion that the Left should simply sell its books from party offices instead of public fairs, a remark many saw as dismissive of the issue's seriousness.

sit awkwardly next to

Paragraph 5

Investigations into the vandalism are still ongoing, and the identity of those responsible has not been officially confirmed.

यहाँ कहा गया है कि तोड़फोड़ की जाँच अभी भी जारी है और यह आधिकारिक तौर पर तय नहीं हुआ है कि इसके पीछे असल में कौन ज़िम्मेदार है। investigation का अर्थ है जाँच। ongoing का अर्थ है जारी, चल रहा, आसान पर्याय है 'चालू'। the identity of those responsible has not been officially confirmed एक passive voice वाला वाक्य है, यानी यह बताने के बजाय कि किसने पुष्टि नहीं की, यह बताया गया है कि पहचान की पुष्टि नहीं हुई है। इससे स्पष्ट है कि लेखक किसी पर सीधा आरोप नहीं लगा रहा।

What remains clear is that Bengal's literary culture and its appetite for open argument are widely seen as genuine strengths, not threats to be managed.

threats to be managed एक infinitive passive रचना है, जिसका अर्थ है 'जिन्हें संभाला जाना है'।

Commentators suggest that protecting this common ground, rather than narrowing it, should be a natural priority for any government claiming to represent the state's traditions.

Paragraph 6

Taken together, these events suggest that governing well requires more than winning an election and delivering slogans.

It demands patient institution-building, job creation and a willingness to let political rivals coexist in shared public spaces.

Bengal's voters, the argument goes, deserve a government that governs quietly and effectively, not one that keeps fighting old battles on new soil.

यहाँ कहा गया है कि बंगाल के मतदाता, जैसा कि तर्क दिया जा रहा है, एक ऐसी सरकार के हक़दार हैं जो चुपचाप और प्रभावी ढंग से शासन करे, न कि एक ऐसी सरकार जो नई ज़मीन पर पुरानी लड़ाइयाँ लड़ती रहे। the argument goes का अर्थ है जैसा तर्क दिया जाता है, यह एक बीच में डाला गया वाक्यांश है। fight old battles on new soil एक idiom जैसा प्रयोग है, जिसका अर्थ है पुराने झगड़ों को नए हालात में फिर से दोहराना।

सार: यह आख़िरी पैराग्राफ़ पूरे लेख का सार देता है कि असली अच्छा शासन संस्था-निर्माण, रोज़गार और सहनशीलता से आता है, न कि पुरानी राजनीति दोहराने से।
