The southwest monsoon this year was far from encouraging. Between June and September, India 759.4 mm of rainfall compared to a normal of 868.6 mm, a of 12.6 percent and the driest spell in eleven years. A El Niño, a warming of the central Ocean, is widely seen as the reason behind this dry spell. The shortage has already kharif sowing, the main crop-planting season, and its effects are visible in rising food prices across the country.

The India Meteorological Department has now forecast that the northeast monsoon will likely be 'normal' this year, meaning it should stay close to the fifty-year average rainfall figure. However, this forecast carries a wide of error of around 12 percent, compared to just 5 percent for the southwest monsoon. Most parts of India are expected to see below-normal rainfall, while the northwest and the southern peninsula may get normal to above-normal showers. This lack of precision makes the northeast monsoon far harder to plan for than its summer .

History shows why this matters so much. On December 1, 2015, Chennai witnessed its heaviest single-day rainfall in more than a century, a that killed around 500 people and nearly 18 lakh residents. That disastrous year, like the present one, was marked by a El Niño. This shared background raises a genuine concern that an El Niño year could again bring a sudden, destructive downpour instead of a calm, steady season.

Yet the link between El Niño and the northeast monsoon is not simple or constant. In some El Niño years, such as 1997 and 2009, Tamil Nadu actually above-normal rainfall during these months. In other El Niño years, such as 1982 and 2002, the northeast monsoon turned out weak, matching an already poor southwest monsoon. Scientists have not yet fully explained this pattern, though it seems that the ocean's warming may push rain-carrying cyclones off their usual paths in directions.

Given this uncertainty, preparedness becomes the only sensible response for both the central government and the southern states. Officials need to clear stormwater drains well before the season begins, vulnerable shelters, and keep emergency funds ready for possible infrastructure . Weather agencies must also sharpen their short-term warning systems so that local authorities and citizens get enough notice before any sudden of rain arrives. A mix of caution and quick action can turn an season into a manageable one.

In short, while a 'normal' forecast sounds , the wide error window of the northeast monsoon means nothing should be taken for granted. The experience of 2015 is a clear reminder that comfort based on averages can be misleading when El Niño is involved. Careful planning, not casual optimism, should guide how India approaches the months ahead.

Questions about this topic

What is the northeast monsoon and which states does it affect most?

The northeast monsoon runs from October to December and mainly brings rain to Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.

How is El Niño connected to India's monsoons?

El Niño is a warming of the central Pacific Ocean. It usually weakens the southwest monsoon but has an unpredictable, sometimes opposite, effect on the northeast monsoon.

Why is the 2015 Chennai flood often mentioned alongside this year's forecast?

Both years share a strong El Niño, and 2015 showed that even an El Niño year can bring extreme, sudden rainfall instead of just drought-like conditions.

पूरा हिंदी अनुवाद – Wicked Surprise: Northeast Monsoon Brings Hope and Risk

Paragraph 1

India is still recovering from a weak southwest monsoon, and now attention has shifted to the 'other monsoon' — the northeast monsoon.

This seasonal wind system gives only about a quarter of India's total yearly rainfall, yet it is the main source of water for the south-eastern peninsula.

States such as Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala depend heavily on it between October and December.

इस line में उन राज्यों के नाम दिए गए हैं जो अक्टूबर से दिसंबर के बीच इस northeast monsoon पर बहुत अधिक निर्भर रहते हैं, जैसे तमिलनाडु, पुडुचेरी, तटीय आंध्र प्रदेश, रायलसीमा, दक्षिण आंतरिक कर्नाटक और केरल। depend heavily on – किसी चीज़ पर बहुत ज़्यादा निर्भर रहना, यह एक collocation है, synonym है rely greatly on। coastal – तटीय, समुद्र के किनारे का। interior – आंतरिक भाग, भीतरी इलाक़ा। पिछली line में कहा गया था कि यह प्रायद्वीप के लिए मुख्य जल स्रोत है, अब यहाँ वे राज्य बताए गए हैं जो उस पर निर्भर हैं।

The hope is that it will make up for earlier losses, but there is also trepidation, since this rainfall pattern can behave in unpredictable ways.

इस line में कहा गया है कि उम्मीद है कि यह बारिश पहले हुई कमी को पूरा कर देगी, लेकिन साथ ही एक डर भी है क्योंकि इस बारिश का व्यवहार अप्रत्याशित हो सकता है। make up for – किसी कमी की भरपाई करना, एक phrasal verb है, synonym है compensate for। trepidation – भय, घबराहट, यह word SSC में पूछा जा चुका है, synonym है apprehension। unpredictable – अप्रत्याशित, जिसका अंदाज़ा न लगाया जा सके। wrap: यह पूरा पैराग्राफ़ बताता है कि northeast monsoon भले कम बारिश दे लेकिन दक्षिण भारत के कई राज्यों के लिए यह बेहद ज़रूरी है, और इस साल उससे उम्मीद भी है और डर भी।

Paragraph 2

The southwest monsoon this year was far from encouraging.

इस line में सीधा बताया गया है कि इस साल का southwest monsoon बिल्कुल भी उत्साहजनक नहीं रहा। far from – बिल्कुल नहीं, कोसों दूर, एक collocation है जो किसी बात को पूरी तरह नकारने के लिए use होता है। encouraging – उत्साहजनक, हौसला बढ़ाने वाला, synonym है promising। यह line अगले हिस्से के लिए भूमिका बनाती है जहाँ आंकड़े दिए जाएंगे।

Between June and September, India received 759.4 mm of rainfall compared to a normal of 868.6 mm, a shortfall of 12.6 percent and the driest spell in eleven years.

A strengthening El Niño, a warming of the central Pacific Ocean, is widely seen as the reason behind this dry spell.

The shortage has already damaged kharif sowing, the main crop-planting season, and its effects are visible in rising food prices across the country.

Paragraph 3

The India Meteorological Department has now forecast that the northeast monsoon will likely be 'normal' this year, meaning it should stay close to the fifty-year average rainfall figure.

However, this forecast carries a wide margin of error of around 12 percent, compared to just 5 percent for the southwest monsoon.

इस line में बताया गया है कि इस अनुमान में लगभग बारह प्रतिशत की बड़ी त्रुटि की गुंजाइश है, जबकि southwest monsoon के अनुमान में यह सिर्फ़ पांच प्रतिशत होती है। margin of error – त्रुटि की गुंजाइश, अनुमान में हो सकने वाली चूक की सीमा। compared to – की तुलना में, यह एक preposition pair वाला collocation है जो दो चीज़ों की तुलना दिखाता है।

Most parts of India are expected to see below-normal rainfall, while the northwest and the southern peninsula may get normal to above-normal showers.

इस line में बताया गया है कि भारत के अधिकतर हिस्सों में सामान्य से कम बारिश होने की उम्मीद है, जबकि उत्तर-पश्चिम और दक्षिणी प्रायद्वीप में सामान्य से सामान्य से अधिक बारिश हो सकती है। below-normal – सामान्य से कम। above-normal – सामान्य से अधिक। यहाँ 'are expected to' passive structure है जिसका सही active रूप होगा 'Experts expect most parts of India to see below-normal rainfall'।

This lack of precision makes the northeast monsoon far harder to plan for than its summer counterpart.

Paragraph 4

History shows why this imprecision matters so much.

On December 1, 2015, Chennai witnessed its heaviest single-day rainfall in more than a century, a deluge that killed around 500 people and displaced nearly 18 lakh residents.

grammar की बात करें तो 'displaced' यहाँ past participle की तरह प्रयोग हुआ है जो 'a deluge that killed... and displaced...' में दो क्रियाओं को जोड़ रहा है।

That disastrous year, like the present one, was marked by a powerful El Niño.

grammar नोट: 'was marked by' passive voice में है, active करें तो 'A powerful El Niño marked that disastrous year'।

This shared background raises a genuine concern that an El Niño year could again bring a sudden, destructive downpour instead of a calm, steady season.

Paragraph 5

Yet the link between El Niño and the northeast monsoon is not simple or constant.

In some El Niño years, such as 1997 and 2009, Tamil Nadu actually received above-normal rainfall during these months.

यहाँ उदाहरण दिया गया है कि कुछ El Niño वाले सालों में, जैसे उन्नीस सौ सत्तानवे और दो हज़ार नौ में, तमिलनाडु को वास्तव में सामान्य से ज़्यादा बारिश मिली थी। actually – वास्तव में, सरल पर्याय 'सचमुच'। above-normal – सामान्य से अधिक। grammar नोट: 'such as 1997 and 2009' examples देने के लिए प्रयोग हुआ preposition phrase है।

In other El Niño years, such as 1982 and 2002, the northeast monsoon turned out weak, matching an already poor southwest monsoon.

Scientists have not yet fully explained this pattern, though it seems that the ocean's warming may push rain-carrying cyclones off their usual paths in unpredictable directions.

Paragraph 6

Given this uncertainty, preparedness becomes the only sensible response for both the central government and the southern states.

Officials need to clear stormwater drains well before the season begins, strengthen vulnerable shelters, and keep emergency funds ready for possible infrastructure damage.

grammar नोट: 'need to clear... strengthen... and keep' तीन क्रियाएँ parallel structure में जुड़ी हैं।

Weather agencies must also sharpen their short-term warning systems so that local authorities and citizens get enough notice before any sudden torrent of rain arrives.

A mix of caution and quick action can turn an unpredictable season into a manageable one.

Paragraph 7

In short, while a 'normal' forecast sounds reassuring, the wide error window of the northeast monsoon means nothing should be taken for granted.

यहाँ लेखक कह रहे हैं कि भले ही 'normal' forecast सुनने में अच्छा और भरोसेमंद लगता है, लेकिन northeast monsoon के forecast में error window यानी ग़लती की संभावना काफ़ी बड़ी है, इसलिए किसी भी चीज़ को बिना सोचे-समझे मान नहीं लेना चाहिए। मतलब सावधानी ज़रूरी है, भरोसा आँख बंद करके नहीं करना चाहिए।

The experience of 2015 is a clear reminder that comfort based on averages can be misleading when El Niño is involved.

इस line में कहा गया है कि साल दो हज़ार पंद्रह का अनुभव हमें साफ़ याद दिलाता है कि जब औसत आँकड़ों के आधार पर आराम महसूस किया जाता है, तो वह भ्रामक हो सकता है, ख़ासकर तब जब El Niño जैसी स्थिति शामिल हो। यानी सिर्फ़ average के भरोसे नहीं रहना चाहिए।

Careful planning, not casual optimism, should guide how India approaches the months ahead.

Summary & revision

All the best!
