The editorial explained

Operation Trident, a coordinated multi-agency offensive against a narcotics syndicate straddling the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor, represents a escalation in the state's war on drug trafficking. The operation, which culminated in eighteen arrests on October 23, was no isolated raid but the fruit of persistent NCB investigations that began with the arrest of an Myanmar-based in Delhi earlier this year. The Union Home Minister has set a firm deadline of December 31, 2029, to drug networks nationwide, an that is ambitious given the transnational and entrenched nature of such syndicates.

Yet eliminating a single cell, however , is not synonymous with dismantling an network. Genuine success demands the identification of every supplier operating across the Myanmar border and their eventual prosecution in courts of law. The government's broader , articulated in the Vision Document on Drug covering 2026 to 2029, an unusually wide coalition: States, Union Territories, over forty Ministries, central agencies and even the pharmaceutical sector, whose legitimate chemicals are sometimes diverted for drug manufacture. The plan dismantling a hundred major cartels while improving , acknowledging implicitly that past efforts often ended in without convictions.

Statistical indicators for 2025 appear encouraging at first glance: arrests rose by over fifty per cent and cases registered under narcotics law by nearly the same proportion compared with the previous year. Such figures, while suggestive of more vigorous enforcement, cannot by themselves be read as proof that drug availability or consumption has actually , since greater enforcement activity may simply reflect better detection rather than a shrinking market.

The more and troubling pattern is that operators, especially those based abroad, frequently evade capture while lower-level carriers bear the brunt of prosecution. The 2021 Mundra port case, where nearly three thousand kilograms of heroin were seized in Gujarat, remains emblematic of this asymmetry: the Afghanistan-based suppliers allegedly behind the consignment have still not been brought to book years later, despite the scale of the .

Punjab continues to illustrate the human cost that abstract statistics conceal. Reports of drug-related killings of anti-narcotics activists in Mansa and Gurdaspur, together with the of a father in Sangrur who had publicly flagged the easy availability of drugs in his locality, expose both the lethality of these networks and the vulnerability of ordinary citizens who dare to speak out. Such incidents raise uncomfortable questions about whether and activists receive adequate protection from the state.

What emerges, then, is a case for recalibrating priorities: instead of disproportionately targeting individual couriers who are easily replaced, agencies must the money trail with precision to the ultimate beneficiaries, the so-called big sharks, and ensure their . Only , inter-agency coordination, sustained well beyond any single operation, can translate ambitious deadlines into a durable reduction in drug trafficking across this volatile corridor.

Operation Trident: Chasing the Big Sharks of Drug Trafficking

Paragraph 1

Operation Trident, a coordinated multi-agency offensive against a narcotics syndicate straddling the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor, represents a significant escalation in the state's war on drug trafficking.

The operation, which culminated in eighteen arrests on October 23, was no isolated raid but the fruit of persistent NCB investigations that began with the arrest of an alleged Myanmar-based kingpin in Delhi earlier this year.

The Union Home Minister has set a firm deadline of December 31, 2029, to eradicate drug networks nationwide, an objective that is ambitious given the transnational and entrenched nature of such syndicates.

Paragraph 2

Yet eliminating a single cell, however significant, is not synonymous with dismantling an entire network.

Genuine success demands the meticulous identification of every supplier operating across the Myanmar border and their eventual prosecution in courts of law.

The government's broader approach, articulated in the Vision Document on Drug Control covering 2026 to 2029, involves an unusually wide coalition: States, Union Territories, over forty Ministries, central agencies and even the pharmaceutical sector, whose legitimate chemicals are sometimes diverted for synthetic drug manufacture.

The plan envisages dismantling a hundred major cartels while improving conviction outcomes, acknowledging implicitly that past efforts often ended in seizures without convictions.

Paragraph 3

Statistical indicators for 2025 appear encouraging at first glance: arrests rose by over fifty per cent and cases registered under narcotics law increased by nearly the same proportion compared with the previous year.

Such figures, while suggestive of more vigorous enforcement, cannot by themselves be read as proof that drug availability or consumption has actually declined, since greater enforcement activity may simply reflect better detection rather than a shrinking market.

grammar point: 'cannot by themselves be read as proof' passive voice में है, यानी आँकड़े खुद सबूत नहीं बन सकते।

सार: इस पैराग्राफ का सार यह है कि आँकड़ों में वृद्धि दिखना अच्छा संकेत तो है, लेकिन इससे यह निश्चित नहीं होता कि नशे की समस्या वाकई कम हुई है।

Paragraph 4

The more consistent and troubling pattern is that principal operators, especially those based abroad, frequently evade capture while lower-level carriers bear the brunt of prosecution.

इस line में बताया गया है कि एक ज़्यादा लगातार और चिंताजनक पैटर्न यह है कि मुख्य संचालक, खासकर जो विदेश में बैठे हैं, अक्सर पकड़े जाने से बच जाते हैं, जबकि छोटे स्तर के वाहक ही मुकदमे का ज़्यादा बोझ झेलते हैं। principal – प्रमुख, मुख्य, यह word SSC में पूछा जा चुका है। evade capture – पकड़े जाने से बचना। bear the brunt of – सबसे ज़्यादा नुकसान या बोझ झेलना, यह एक idiom है। carriers – वाहक, सामान पहुँचाने वाले लोग।

The 2021 Mundra port case, where nearly three thousand kilograms of heroin were seized in Gujarat, remains emblematic of this asymmetry: the Afghanistan-based suppliers allegedly behind the consignment have still not been brought to book years later, despite the scale of the seizure.

Paragraph 5

Punjab continues to illustrate the human cost that abstract statistics conceal.

इस line में बताया गया है कि पंजाब लगातार यह दिखा रहा है कि आँकड़ों के पीछे असली इंसानी कीमत क्या है, जो सामान्य संख्याओं में छुपी रहती है। illustrate – उदाहरण से स्पष्ट करना, दिखाना। human cost – इंसानी कीमत, यानी लोगों को होने वाला नुकसान या पीड़ा। abstract – अमूर्त, सामान्य, जो सीधे महसूस न हो। conceal – छुपाना, ढकना। grammar point: 'continues to illustrate' present perfect continuous जैसा भाव देता है, यानी यह लगातार होने वाली प्रक्रिया है।

Reports of drug-related killings of anti-narcotics activists in Mansa and Gurdaspur, together with the alleged suicide of a father in Sangrur who had publicly flagged the easy availability of synthetic drugs in his locality, expose both the lethality of these networks and the vulnerability of ordinary citizens who dare to speak out.

dare to speak out का अर्थ है हिम्मत करके खुलकर बोलना, यह phrase idiom जैसा प्रयोग होता है हिम्मत दिखाने के लिए।

Such incidents raise uncomfortable questions about whether whistle-blowers and activists receive adequate protection from the state.

Paragraph 6

What emerges, then, is a case for recalibrating priorities: instead of disproportionately targeting individual couriers who are easily replaced, agencies must follow the money trail with precision to identify the ultimate beneficiaries, the so-called big sharks, and ensure their conviction.

Only consistent, efficient inter-agency coordination, sustained well beyond any single operation, can translate ambitious deadlines into a durable reduction in drug trafficking across this volatile corridor.

grammar point: 'can translate... into...' का अर्थ है किसी चीज़ को दूसरी चीज़ में बदलना, यह एक useful collocation है।

सार: इस पैराग्राफ का सार यह है कि लेखक सुझाव देता है कि छोटे लोगों के बजाय बड़े सरगनाओं पर ध्यान केंद्रित करना चाहिए, और यह तभी संभव है जब सभी एजेंसियां लगातार और कुशलता से मिलकर काम करें।
